Garage Door Cable Repair and Replacement

A broken garage door cable is one of those problems that goes from minor to serious fast.

One day the door sounds a little off. The next day it won't open, or worse, it slams shut when you least expect it. If your cable is fraying, off the drum, or completely snapped, our team can get you back up and running the same day in most cases.

At Hamburg Overhead Door, we have been repairing and replacing garage door cables across Western New York for over 60 years.

Signs Your Garage Door Cable Needs Repair

Cables do most of their work quietly, so when something goes wrong, the symptoms are usually sudden. Watch for any of these:

  • Visible fraying on the cable, especially near the drum at the top of the door
  • The cable has come off the drum and is hanging loose
  • The door is uneven or crooked when it opens or closes
  • A loud snap or bang the last time you used the door
  • The door won't open at all, or opens only partway before stopping
  • The door feels heavier than usual when you try to lift it manually

If you notice any of these, stop using the door and call us. Continuing to run a door with a failing cable puts stress on the opener, the springs, and the tracks, and can turn a small repair into a much bigger one.

Why Cable Repair Is Not a DIY Job

Garage door cables work in tension with the door's torsion springs, which hold an enormous amount of stored energy. Attempting to replace a cable without properly securing those springs is one of the most common causes of serious garage door injuries. It is exactly the kind of shortcut we cover in our 5 Mistakes We've Seen in Garage Door Installations post.

There is also a diagnostic piece. When a cable comes off the drum or snaps, it is often a symptom of something else, an unbalanced door, a worn spring, or a bent drum. Replacing the cable without addressing the underlying cause means you will be calling us back within weeks.

Our IDEA and OSHA certified technicians handle the cable and any related spring, drum, or bracket issues in a single visit, safely and correctly.

What Our Cable Repair Service Includes

Every cable repair call starts with a free on-site diagnostic. Once we know exactly what happened, we walk you through what we found before any work begins. A typical cable repair visit includes:

  • Full diagnostic of the cable, spring, drum, and track system
  • Cable replacement with the correct gauge and specification for your door
  • Re-tensioning and balancing of the door after replacement
  • Safety inspection of springs, drums, brackets, and rollers
  • Same-day service whenever possible for emergency situations

If you are due for a full service, we can also handle preventive maintenance in the same visit to catch anything else that might be wearing out.
